Getting to Know your Exterior Paint Types

Paint puts the life and color on any surface. Using paint on your exteriors gives your home character and life. It helps in enhancing the fine details of your home structure. There are basically two types of exterior paint that you should know of. That is latex and alkyd paint. The difference of these two is that latex is water based therefore it dries fast. Alkyd has more VOC (volatile organic compounds) in it that is why it has a strong solvent smell. Although Alkyd has more toxic chemicals in it, and drying time takes longer, the result is a factory like finish that is preferred by more professional painters.

These two paints cannot be used together. There are specific surfaces that require a specific type of paint to be applied. For example, DTM or Direct to Metal paint is ideal for metallic surfaces. Elastomeric paint is specifically designed for cracked masonry. Use Epoxy paint to produce rough and tough surfaces. This is ideal for painting garage floors to avoid slips. Urethane enamels is ideal for painting wooden floors. It brings out a shiny finish that is durable against scratches. You also have the old fashioned paint which claims to have the least VOC yet are surprisingly attractive and hard-wearing.
